Abstract: Although the final product of research is peer reviewed publications, many published papers are hard to read. Make your academic research papers clear and easy to read by knowing and writing for your audience. Audience analysis facilitates selection of appropriate target journals, preparation of detailed writing plans, and drafting sentences and paragraphs that effectively communicate your research story. We will analyze student writing to find examples of patterns that hinder reader understanding, and then consider reader expectations while revising this text to smooth the reader’s path through the author’s reasoning. Finally, we will consider some best practices for submission of papers to academic journals. Increase rates of acceptance and citation of your academic papers by carefully planning the writing process with the audience in mind.
