Abstract
In January 2020, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) published “Asia’s Journey to Prosperity: Policy, Market, and Technology over 50 Years”. It offers an overview of Asia’s phenomenal growth and transformation over the past 50 years, and discusses the key policy lessons drawn from the region’s continuing success. The book focuses on the role that policies, markets, and technology play in promoting structural transformation, human capital development, trade and investment, infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, poverty reduction, gender equality, environmental sustainability, development finance, and regional cooperation and integration.
The sudden emergence of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the ensuing pandemic underscored the importance of building disaster resilience, a topic of increasing relevance not specifically covered with its own chapter. To systematically address issues that are related to disaster resilience, on July 1, 2021, ADB publishes a new report, “Disaster Resilience in Asia,” which is a special supplement of “Asia’s Journey to Prosperity: Policy, Market, and Technology over 50 Years.” In this lecture, we will discuss the miracle and challenges of Asian development, followed by how the latest techniques of empirical economics can be utilized to trace Asia’s development experience.
